Video Resizer — free online tool
Changing a video's resolution, for example going from 4K to 1080p or 720p, greatly reduces its size and makes it easier to play on a modest device. Enter the width and height you want, and Vidlora re-encodes the video at those new dimensions as an MP4.

What resizing changes
Resizing changes the number of pixels in each frame: a 3840 x 2160 video contains four times as many pixels as a 1920 x 1080 one. The tool scales each frame and then re-encodes the video stream as MP4. Since fewer pixels mean less data to encode, the file gets lighter, sometimes dramatically, at an equivalent bitrate per pixel.
How to use it
Upload the video, enter the width and height you want, then start processing. To avoid distorting the picture, keep the same ratio between width and height as the original: a 16:9 stays a 16:9, for example 1280 x 720. Dimensions generally need to be even numbers, because many video codecs require it. Then download the file and check that it plays properly.
Common dimensions
A few 16:9 reference points: 3840 x 2160 (4K), 2560 x 1440 (QHD), 1920 x 1080 (Full HD), 1280 x 720 (HD), 854 x 480 (SD) and 640 x 360. For vertical portrait video aimed at short-form formats, 1080 x 1920 is the reference. Choose the smallest size that still looks comfortable on the destination screen: a video watched on a phone rarely benefits from going beyond 1080p.
Scaling down or up
Reducing the resolution is the normal use case: smaller size, smoother playback, meeting a limit imposed by a platform or a player. Scaling up is possible, but adds no real detail: the image is simply interpolated, blurrier than true high definition, and the file grows. It can still be useful to fill a required frame.
Formats and compatibility
Input accepts MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. The output is a re-encoded MP4, played by most devices. Note that AVI is not accepted on this page: first convert it to MP4 with the video converter. The sound is kept as it is in the final file; only the picture is scaled.
Mistakes to avoid
Do not enter dimensions in a different ratio from the original, or the picture will be stretched or squashed. Do not try to sharpen a blurry video by enlarging it. To trim the edges of the picture without distorting it, use the crop tool instead. Finally, if the size is still too high after resizing, add a compression pass.
القيود
Resizing re-encodes the video, with a slight loss. Scaling a video up does not improve its sharpness. Accepted formats are MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV (not AVI), and the output is always an MP4. The tool does not crop the picture: it scales it.
الأسئلة الشائعة
How do I avoid distorting my video?
Keep the original's width-to-height ratio. For example, halve both dimensions: 1920 x 1080 becomes 960 x 540. A different ratio would stretch or squash the picture.
Does resizing reduce the file size?
Generally yes, since there are fewer pixels to encode. How much depends on the content and the reduction applied. To go further, combine it with the video compressor.
Can I enlarge a small video to make it sharper?
No. Enlarging increases the dimensions but adds no detail: the picture looks blurrier and the file is heavier. It is better to keep the original resolution.
Why do the dimensions have to be even?
Many video codecs, such as H.264, work on blocks and do not always handle odd dimensions. Use even values to avoid an error or rounding.
What is the difference from cropping?
Resizing scales the whole picture; cropping removes edges and keeps only one area. The two tools can be combined: crop first, then resize.
Is the AVI format supported?
Not on this page, which accepts MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV. First convert your AVI to MP4 with the video converter, then resize the result.
