MP4 vs WebM: which format should you use
MP4 and WebM are both video containers, but they typically pair with different codecs, which is what actually drives most of the practical differences.

Compatibility
MP4 (usually H.264 video + AAC audio) plays natively almost everywhere — phones, browsers, TVs, editing software, with no extra codec needed. WebM (usually VP8/VP9 or AV1 + Opus) is built for the web and plays in every modern browser, but has patchier support in native device apps and older software.
File size and quality
WebM's codecs are often more efficient than H.264 at the same visual quality, meaning a smaller file — one reason it's common for web video. The tradeoff is usually longer encode time.
When to convert
Convert to MP4 when you need the widest device/app compatibility. Convert to WebM when the video is destined for a website and you want smaller files without noticeably lower quality.
