How the conversion works
The video is read by FFmpeg, the picture is discarded and the soundtrack is encoded as MP3 (MPEG-1 Audio Layer III). MP3 relies on a psychoacoustic model that removes sounds the ear barely perceives: you save a lot of space, at the cost of an irreversible but generally discreet loss. The result is a file that takes up just a few megabytes per hour of speech.
Listen offline, anywhere
MP3's main strength is its universality. It plays on smartphones, car stereos with a USB port, portable players, Bluetooth speakers and computers, with no special app. A video class thus becomes a track you listen to on public transport, without using mobile data or spending battery to display the picture. This is the most common use of this conversion.
How to use it
Drop the file, start the conversion, then download the MP3. If your video lasts several hours, allow a bit more time: encoding is proportional to the audio length. Then rename the file with a descriptive title, since the video's original name is often not very meaningful, which makes it easier to sort in a music library or podcast app.
Which bitrate to favor
An MP3 is generally set between 96 kbit/s and 320 kbit/s. Around 96 to 128 kbit/s, voice stays clear and the file is tiny, which suits lectures. For music, 192 to 320 kbit/s preserve more brightness. Beyond the quality of the original track, raising the bitrate gains nothing: it only bloats the file.

Rights and limits
Only convert content you own the rights to, that is royalty-free, or that you have permission to use. Copying the soundtrack of a protected work in order to distribute it is illegal in most countries. Technically, an MP3 taken from an already compressed video accumulates losses: the final quality always depends on the source.
