Crop Video — free online tool

Cropping means keeping only part of the picture: removing black bars, isolating an area of the screen, going from a wide format to a square or vertical one. You specify the position and size of the area to keep, and Vidlora produces an MP4 at the new dimensions.

Nasıl çalışır?

The principle of cropping

Cropping cuts a rectangle out of every frame of the video and throws away everything around it. It is defined by four values: the position of the top-left corner (x and y) and the width and height of the area kept, expressed in pixels. The video stream is then re-encoded as MP4 at that reduced size. No scaling is applied: the pixels kept stay at their original resolution.

Step-by-step usage

Upload your video, enter the starting position and the size of the area to keep, then start processing. To find the right values, you can use the metadata analysis tool, which gives the video's exact dimensions. Example: to extract a centered square from a 1920 x 1080 video, choose a size of 1080 x 1080 and a horizontal position of 420.

Real-world cases

Remove the black bars from a film shot in the wrong format, keep only the application window from a screen recording, go from a horizontal video to a square framing for a post, pull out a detail from a wide shot, or remove an unwanted interface bar. Cropping is ideal when the subject takes up only part of the picture.

Common aspect ratios

16:9 (1920 x 1080) is the usual horizontal format; 1:1 (1080 x 1080) is square; 9:16 (1080 x 1920) is vertical; 4:5 (1080 x 1350) is a slight portrait. In a 1920 x 1080 16:9 video, a centered 9:16 area measures about 608 x 1080 pixels: you lose a lot of width and the final resolution is modest.

Compatibility

Input formats are MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV; the output is an MP4 playable on most devices. Dimensions generally need to stay even for common video codecs. The area you choose cannot exceed the original picture: x plus width must stay less than or equal to the video's width, and likewise for y and height.

Frequent mistakes

A common mistake is going beyond the picture's limits, which makes processing fail. Another trap is believing that a crop enlarges the chosen area to fill the screen; it does not. If you then want precise dimensions, follow up with the video resizer. To remove time rather than space, use the trimmer instead.

Sınırlamalar

Cropping re-encodes the video, with a slight loss, and does not scale the area kept. You have to enter the position and size values yourself, with no guaranteed interactive preview. Only MP4, MOV, WebM and MKV are accepted, and the output is an MP4.

Sık sorulan sorular

How precise is the crop?

It is expressed in pixels: the position and size you enter are those of the area kept, down to the pixel. Check that the values do not exceed the video's dimensions.

How do I find out my video's dimensions?

Use Vidlora's video metadata analysis tool: it shows the exact width and height, as well as the codec and frame rate, before you choose your area.

Can I crop and resize in one go?

No, this tool only crops. If you then want precise dimensions, run the result through the video resizer to get the final size you want.

Why is my cropped video smaller on screen?

Because cropping does not scale: a 600 x 600 pixel area displays at 600 x 600. To enlarge it, use the resizer, bearing in mind the picture will be less sharp.

Can I switch to vertical format for short-form video?

Yes, by choosing a 9:16 area in the horizontal video. You will lose the sides of the picture: make sure the subject stays within the area kept.

Is the sound kept?

Yes, the audio track is kept in the output MP4. Cropping only affects the picture and does not change the video's duration.
