How to compress a video online
Compressing a video reduces its file size, usually by re-encoding it with a lower bitrate target — trading a small, often invisible amount of quality for a much smaller file.

What actually gets smaller
A compressor re-encodes the video stream at a new quality target (measured by CRF — lower CRF means higher quality and a larger file). Audio is typically re-encoded too, at a lower but still clear bitrate. The result plays back identically in structure, just with less data per second.
Picking a quality level
For sharing over messaging apps or email, a moderate setting usually cuts file size dramatically with quality loss most people won't notice at normal viewing distance. Only push compression further when file size matters more than fine visual detail — for archival copies, keep quality high.
When compression won't help much
Screen recordings, already-compressed footage, and low-motion video compress less dramatically than raw high-motion camera footage, since there's less redundant data for the encoder to remove.
