How to extract audio from a video
Extracting audio discards the video stream entirely and keeps only the sound, encoded to a standalone audio file.

Why extract instead of just muting
Muting a video keeps the picture (and its much larger file size). Extraction produces a small, audio-only file — useful for podcasts, lecture recordings, or pulling a soundtrack out of a clip.
Choosing MP3, WAV, or AAC
MP3 is the most universally compatible choice. WAV is uncompressed — larger, but lossless, useful if you'll edit the audio further. AAC often sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate but has slightly less universal support.
Picking a bitrate
Spoken word stays clear even at low bitrates (96–128 kbps). Music benefits from 192–320 kbps to preserve detail.
